beach

John Lamont: Taken by the famous Durban beach photographer of many decades, "Scotty", on
Durban beach. It shows him wearing his ceremonial (2 prong) leather belt, that I still have, along

with the swagger-cane and Tam-o' Shanter and hose-tabs in that photo. Note also his "side-arms"
(a bayonet). This was because of the attacks on troops by groups of the Ossewa-Brandwag
(ox-wagon guard), a pro-Nazi anti-British Afrikaans group. Troops on leave were armed and ordered
to defend themselves. That bayonet was used by my parents to cut their wedding cake, a tradition
that I continued.
