When Percy Hurd's The Fighting Territorials was published in 1915, it was considered just another "shilling shocker," one of hundreds of cheap titles sold primarily in railroad stations and intended as an affordable diversion for the weary commuter on his way home from the office. Unlike the usual lurid fare offered in such publications, though, this volume offers some real information about the citizen soldiers of the time (along with a dose of the obligatory patriotic rhetoric, of course -this was 1915, after all!)
