Haversack (T.A. pattern) 1st Issue
Haversack (T.A. pattern) 2nd Issue
Like the Carrier, water bottle, this was simplified to Haversack, O.S. standards, i.e. for carriage only on a Brace, although the Brace buckles were located as on the standard ’08 version, on extensions of the gusset. It is assumed that a 1st Issue existed, with plain, crimped Tips, brass, 1-in. on the flap straps.
This is an example, being worn by a Loyal North Lancashire Regiment Territorial. By 1909, the 2nd Issue Haversack had been approved for Patt. ’08. This moved the base buckles for the “diagonal strap” from the corners of the front face, to the rear base seam. No buckles are visible here.
No example of either Issue has yet surfaced. However, the Haversack for the New Zealand Pattern 1911 Equipment is identical to the 2nd issue T.A. Pattern. At left are two examples of the Patt. '11 Haversack. The one at far left has been graphically modified to have crimped tips, and so to emulate the T.A. 1st issue. The Haversack showed at centre and near left is another New Zealand example, this one unmodified, to demonstrate the 2nd Issue, with eyeleted Tips, brass, 1-in. Both examples are from the Barry O'Sullivan Collection, photos © Barry O'Sullivan 2019.
